Uttapam/ Tomato onion uttapam recipe

How to make tomato onion uttapam/Uttappa:-

As we know Uttapam is a south Indian dish which is Dosa like dish and made by cooking all the ingredients in a batter. It is made from the regular ingredients available in your kitchen. Uttapam the south Indian dish is made from the common rice and urad dal batter which is also used for making idli and dosa. Dosa is crisp and crepe like dish but Uttappa is a thick pancake dish with lots of vegetables in it. It is very healthy dish can be eat with the sambar, green chutney, rasam, tomato onion chutney or as of your choice. It is very delicious dish can be given children's tiffen box also. It is very easy and take very less time to cook.


Ingredients for making tomato onion Uttappa:-

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Urad dal - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium (finely chopped)
  • Green chilli - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Capsicum - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Tomato - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  • Oil - for shallow fry
  • Fresh coriander leaves - finely chopped
  • Water - 1 cup

Directions for making the recipe:-

1. Firstly, soak rice and urad dal for 6 hours in water.

2. After 6 hours drain all the water from the rice and urad dal, grind it and make a smooth batter by adding little bit water.

3. Now, rest the batter for 8 to 10 hours for fermentation.

4. When batter gets fermented then add chopped onion, chopped capsicum, chopped tomato, chopped green chilli, chopped fresh coriander leaves, add turmeric powder, add salt as per taste, add red chilli powder, and add garam masala powder for better taste in the batter and mix it well.



5. Now add water as needed for adjusting the pouring consistency of the batter.

6. After that heat a pan and spread oil on it.

7. After 3 to 4 minutes when the pan gets properly heated then put batter on the tava/pan and with the help of ladle spread the in circular motion and cook on medium flame.



8. After 3 to 4 minutes flip the Uttapam and spread 1 to 2 tbsp oil on the edges of uttapam and cook till it gets golden colour from the both side.


9. Now, Uttapam is ready to eat, serve hot with the green chutney, sambar, tomato-onion chutney or as of your choice and enjoy.
