How to make Punjabi style Chole recipe:-

Punjabi Chole is a very popular Punjabi dish in India usually served with Bhature or Puris/Pooris. In north region of India people love to eat Chole as a breakfast or as a meal and in dinner also. This delicious mouth watering dish is made in tomato based gravy with lots of spices in it. If you love spicy dishes then you must try this recipe. You can serve Chole in special occasions like birthday parties, kitti parties and many more. It is the recipe made from easily available and simple ingredients. It is simple and easy to cook and takes very less amount of time. So, lets start the process of learning the recipe with step by step pics.

Ingredients for making Punjabi Chole:- 

  • Chickpea(Kabuli Chana) - 150 gm (soaked)
  • Onion - 3 medium (finely sliced)
  • Tomato - 2 medium (chopped)
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Bay leaf - 2 pieces
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Chole masala powder
  • Green chilli - 2 pieces
  • Ginger - 1 inch
  • Garlic - 6 to 7 cloves
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Salt as required
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnishing (finely chopped)

Directions for making Punjabi Chole:-


⬛ Firstly, soak chickpea with one cup of water for 5 to 6 hours.

⬛ Now, in mixer jar take chopped tomato, 1 chopped onion, green chilli, garlic, ginger, bay leaf, Turmeric powder and make it a smooth paste(tomato-onion paste).


⬛ Turn on the flame and boil chickpea with 1 cup of water until the chickpea becomes soft.

In the next process, heat oil in a kadai or pan.


⬛ Add cumin seeds in the oil and when it began to crackle then add finely sliced onion into it and saute till they turn into golden brown colour.



⬛ After that add tomato-onion paste, salt as required, Chole masala powder and saute till the oil oozes out from it.


⬛ Further, add chickpea into the tomato-onion paste and stir fry for 2 minutes on medium flame.


⬛ Add 1 cup of water in the Chole and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.


Chole is ready now, garnish with the chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with Rice, Poori/Puri, Bhature, Paratha, Butter Naan, Roti, chappati and share your experience with me.
